The effects of university's students on urbanization process: The instance of Bulent Ecevit University

Cities are the process which is the result of the transition nomadic life to settled life. In time, this old city buildings, entered into the process of urbanization, which means a change,and it has undergone major transformations. One of the major factors that cause structural change on the cities is industrialization. Industrialization is not the only factor affecting the urbanization.Universities also is seen as one of the most important other factors affecting the process of urbanization. Universities and their students studying at these universities changes the cities in many ways, including demographic, economic, social and cultural. In Zonguldak, by the establishment of the Bülent Ecevit Üniversity, the city has been influenced by many different angles. In the city of Zonguldak selected as a field work, by the establishment of the Bülent Ecevit Üniversity, the relationship of the university and city has gained a different dimension. Therefore, in this study, Bülent Ecevit Üniversity students's positive and negative effects on the Zonguldak urbanization process. This study applied on the specific sample on the students registered in Bülent Ecevit Üniversity and the students who are studying in the campus center in fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. As a result of the analysis obtained, It has been seen that the students brought by the university to the city affected the demography, spatial location, economy and culture of Zonguldak. As a result, while the gender of the students, the faculty / school they were registered in, the class they were in during the education and training period, the amount of allowance they received from their families seems to be decisive in urban processes, the educational status of the parents and the profession are not sufficiently influencing the urban functions.
