Investigating the relationship between university students' purposes of using mobile technologies and their academic procrastination

The concept of procrastination emerges in societies where technology is developed and living a planned life is important. Procrastication in these societies can also be observed in the field of education, and students who are engaged in mobile technologies may delay the academic tasks that they are expected to fulfil. In this respect, based on the "Uses and Gratifications Approach", the aim of this study was to determine university students' purposes of using mobile technologies, and investigate the relationship between these purposes and students' academic procrastination. In order the answer the research questions of the study, the survey model, correlational model and causal comparison model, which are quantitative research approaches, were employed. Accordingly, the participants were 2077 students who were studying in associate degree and undergraduate programs at a Turkish university in the 2017-2018 academic year and were selected through the stratified sampling method. The data were gathered by means of a personal information form, the "Scale of the Purposes of Using Mobile Technologies" and the "Scale of the Academic Procrastination Behaviors". The findings showed that the university students exhibited moderate levels of using mobile technologies for a certain purpose, and moderate levels of academic procrastionation tendency. Moreover, there was no meaningful relationship between the students' levels of using mobile technologies for a certain purpose, and their levels of academic procrastination tendency.
