Investigation of the correlation between level of altruism and emphatic tendency and self-esteem of university students

This thesis aims to determine the levels of alturism and the relation between emphatic tendency and self-esteem of university students The sample of the study consists of 333 students studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of Bingöl University Psychology and Social Work Departments in 2018-2019 spring term. Personal information form, Alturism Scale, Emphatic Tendency Scale and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale are used as a data collection tool. In the end of the research, the relation between levels of altruism and empathic tendency is found to be in positive direction and meaningful in medium level (r=.412). As students' empathic tendency level increases, their altruism levels increase. The relation between levels of altruism and self-respect is found to be in negative direction and meaningful in low level (r=-.111). As students' self-esteem decreases, altruism levels increase. A meaningful distiction at the levels of alturism of the students has not been found with regard to the grades of the students, their economic situation, associate status of student clubs and the status of involvement in social responsibility projects. It has been found that there is not a meaningful difference on the level of altruism of the students with respect to their genders and the department they study. The women have been found to have higher levels of altruism compared to the men. It has been found that the students of the department of social work have higher levels of altruism compared to the department of psychology. In the level of emphatic tendency of the students a difference has been found with respect to the genders, the grades and the amount of income of the families that students have. It has been found no difference in the levels of empathic tendency with regard to the department of the students, the place where their families live, associate status of student clubs and the status of involvement in social responsibility projects. It has been found distinction on levels of self-esteem of students with respect to the amount of income of the families. It has been found no distinction on the level of self-esteem with respect to the genders, the departments, the grades, the place where their families live, associate status of student clubs and the status of involvement in social responsibility projects.
