The examination of university students' attitudes toward seeking psychological help according to attachment styles, personality traits and some socio demographic variables

There are a lot of possible causes to determine attitudes toward seeking psychological help among university students. The main purpose of the present study is to examine the university students' attitudes toward seeking psychological help according to attachment styles, personality traits and some socio demographic variables. As socio demographic variables, "gender, type of faculty, class differences, residence, socio-economic level" were investigated. The study group consisted of 786 students (441 females and 320 males) studying at Karadeniz Technical University in 2015-2016 academic year. 25 undergraduates didn't choice about gender. The data were collected with "The Scale of Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help-K'' developed by Türküm (2004), "Relationship Scales Questionnaire" developed by Griffin ve Bartholomew (1994) and adapted into Turkish by Sümer and Güngör (1999), "Adjective Based Personality Scale" developed by Bacanlı, İlhan ve Aslan (2009) are used. "Personal Information Form'' prepared by the researcher is used to get information about demographic characteristics of undergraduates. For the data analysis, SPSS 22.0 was used and the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Co- efficient, Multiple Linear Regression, Independent t test and One Way ANOVA analysis techniques were applied. The results indicated that a significant relationship was found between university students' attitudes toward seeking psychological help and secure attachment style in positive way; preoccupied attachment style in the negative way. And the results of the data analysis showed that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between attitudes toward seeking psychological help and extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness personality traits. Furthermore, attitudes toward seeking psychological help was differentiated according to the type of faculty, grades and residence but there was not a significant difference based on the socio-economic level. The results discussed in context of literature and suggestions were provided.
