Examining the relationship between social appearance anxiety and assertiveness levels of üniversity students in terms of varios variables

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between social appearance anxiety and assertiveness. The other purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of these two concepts show whether or not significant difference in terms of the variables of grade, perceived parental attitudes, perceived income status, and perceived academic success. In this research relational screening model was applied concerning the aim. The research sampling was selected by cluster sample method among the National Defense University Naval Academy and total research sampling composed of 520 participants. In order to collect data related to independent variables of the research, " Personal Information Form" was prepared by the researcher. In addition, the data for social appearance anxiety levels was collected through Social Appearance Anxiety Scale that was developed by Hart Flora, Palyo, Fresco, Holle ve Heimberg (2008) and adapted to Turkish by Doğan (2010). The data for assertiveness levels was collected Rathus Assertiveness Inventory that was originally developed by A.S. Rathus (1977) and adapted to Turkish by Nilüfer Voltan Acar (1980). Pearson correlation analysis, Scheffe test, t-test, variance analysis with one factor (ANOVA) were used in analyzing the data. In results of the research, there is a significant negative relationship between social appearance anxiety and assertiveness; in another mean as much as assertiveness levels increases social appearance anxiety levels decreases. The participant' level of social appearance anxiety shows significant differences concerning with grade and no significant differences concerning with perceived income status, perceived parental attitudes, perceived income status, and perceived academic success. The participant' level of assertiveness shows significant differences concerning with grade, perceived academic success, perceived parental attitudes and no significant differences concerning with perceived income status. Under the lights of the research findings, discussion upon the results was performed and some suggestions were offered for future research.
