The State of internet usage of university teaching staff for education

Prof. Dr. Ayşen Gürcan Namlu The Internet has caused radical changes in the way we communicate, do business, socialize and find entertainment. In this context, the Internet can be seen as the most important technological advancement after the Industrial Revolution. As a result, this technology of such a great change, has also changed the way we teach. All these changes in living and educational conditions have also effected the traditional teachers' role as well. Now, teachers are also in charge of guiding students to the information and using this obtained information. In this research the general use of Internet, educational usage of Internet by the teaching staff and their opinions on the effecting factors for educational Internet usage has been investigated. A survey, which was developed by the researcher, was used. It was applied to teaching staff who were teaching during the academic year 2002-2003. The total number of them was 1190 by then and 545 of them replied the survey. So, %46 of the total survey was returned. In this research, correlational survey model has been used and percent, frequency and one way ANOVA was applied to analysis. Microsoft Excel and SPSS 10.0 package program have been used. The results obtained from the survey was compared with former research results. It has seen that although the teaching staff knows how to use Internet, they think that they need to have aproper education for Internet in order to use it effectively. It was also understood that they do not use many of the Internet services for educational purposes while they use Internet mostly for communication and research.
