Determining the occupational health literacy levels of university staff

The aim of this study is to determine the occupational health literacy levels of employees and to examine whether these levels differ according to demographic variables as well as certain individual and organizational factors. The study was conducted using a quantitative research method, and the data were collected through a survey technique. The Occupational Health Literacy Scale was used as the data collection instrument, and its two dimensions, namely Knowledge/Skills and Willingness/Responsibility, were evaluated together. The research was carried out with a total of 593 participants. The collected data were analyzed using statistical methods. The findings revealed that employees working in environments where occupational health practices were effectively implemented and where managers actively enforced occupational health rules had significantly higher levels of occupational health literacy. In addition, individuals who regularly participated in health screenings and those with reading habits demonstrated higher occupational health literacy levels. On the other hand, no significant differences were found with respect to certain demographic variables and characteristics related to work units. As a result, the study demonstrated that both individual awareness and workplace occupational health practices are important factors influencing employees’ occupational health literacy levels.
