Abstract (EN)
Integrated Solid Waste Management is becoming more and more important as a result of complexity of the problems faced by national and local governments to ensure effective and sustainable management of waste. The factors effecting the complexity of the solid waste management are; rapid increase in their amount (production rates too) and volume; changes in composition depending on time and space; lack of available financial funds, limitations in energy sources and raw materials and variety of solid and hazardous waste as a result of continuous economic growth, urbanization and industrialization. Therefore it is aimed to prepare a solid waste management model for university campuses by analyzing the solid waste potential of the campus. Gazi University is choosen as a pilot area. First, contextual framework about solid wastes and management systems are defined in general. Then, current status of the solid waste collection and handling systems in the pilot area are explained. The amount of solid waste produced (per person per day) are calculated. Composition of the solid wastes in Gazi University Beşevler Campus is analyzed and compared with solid waste composition in Ankara, Turkey and some other campuses in different countries. The waste compound study that carried out in Beşevler Campus of Gazi University has resulted as 35% paper wastes, 32% food wastes, 11% plastic wastes, 9% metal wastes, 6% glass wastes and 7% the others. The economic value of the wastes which obtained from campus has been calculated as 450.000 TL. Depending on those data, ideal solid waste management model for Gazi University is prepared.Key words : Solid Waste Management, Composition, University
