The effect of the "reproduction" unit's instruction based on 5e model on students' conceptual understandings and attitudes

This study by which it was searched the effect of reproduction unit?s instruction based on 5E model on students? conceptional understandings and attitudes was conducted in the second semester of 2008-2009 academic year in the two ongoing classes of Sirinyer High School located in Izmir.The study was designed as a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design. The control group was the group to which the lectures were explained by the teacher using the textbooks and the experimental group was the group on which 5E learning model was implemented. To both the control group and experimental group, ?Attitude Scale Towards Biology Lesson? and ? Conceptual Understanding Test Regarding The Reproduction Unit? consisting of open-ended questions were administered prior to and after the instruction. Other than these instruments, semi-constructed interviews were conducted with eight students from these groups after the instruction. The data obtained from the attitude scale was analyzed with independent-samples t test and paired-samples t test using SPSS 11.0 program. The data gathered from the conceptual understanding test and semi-constructed interviews was analyzed as tables.In the consequence of the study, when the misconceptions and the conceptual changes were examined, it was determined that the course-material based on 5E learning model affected the conceptual changes of the students in the experimental group positively. In addition, 5E model was detected as more successful than the the traditional teaching method in terms of conceptual understanding. After the data analysis made for the attitude scale, it was seen that no significant mean difference between the pre-test and post-test was found in the experimental group.
