Abstract (EN)
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans and is one of the most common causes of antibiotic prescribed prescriptions. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the dominant cause of UTI in humans. In healthy individuals, 75–95% of UTI is due to UPEC colonization in the urinary tract. Women are more prone to UTI than men due to anatomical differences in the urogenital system. Bacterial pathogens use a variety of virulence mechanisms to reach the bladders and kidneys, cling to epithelial cells, survive in the urinary tract, continue to grow, and eventually create a UTI to prevent host defense. Metals such as iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, zinc and cobalt act as cofactors for various critical enzymes in most life forms, including bacteria. The main virulence properties demonstrated by uropathogens include the ability to obtain essential metals from the host and expel toxic metals. In this study, it was aimed to compare the levels of copper and zinc in urine in individuals with urinary tract infections and individuals with asymptomatic bacteriuria. Our study was performed in 180 patients diagnosed with urinary tract infection or asymptomatic bacteriuria who applied to Sakarya University EAH between January 2018 and February 2019. The frequency of women and inpatients in the UTI positive group is significantly higher than the ABU positive group. In addition, a statistically significant difference was noted between TIT LEU and protein positivity among the study (p <0.01). The frequency of TIT LEU and protein positivity was found to be significantly higher in UTI positive patients than in the ABU positive group. In the study, no statistically significant difference was noted between the TIT nitrite, Glucose and Blood positivity among the groups (p> 0.05). A statistically significant difference was obtained between the groups in terms of urine Cu and Zn levels (p <0.01). Urine copper and zinc levels in ABU positive patients are significantly higher than UTI positive patients.
