Retrospective evaluation of urinary system infections after urinary stent and prostate biopsy procedures in urology clinic

Abstract (EN)
Urinary tract infections are among the most common infectious diseases in the community. In patients with stents attached to the urinary system, stents are a source for the attachment of bacteria. Prostate biopsy is performed from a region with a flora like rectum, and bacteria are transported to the prostate and urinary system during the procedure. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively evaluate urinary tract infections in patients who underwent urinary stent insertion, removal, removal and insertion in the same session and prostate biopsy. Material-method: This study was planned retrospectively. The files of patients who underwent urinary stents as an invasive procedure and patients who underwent prostate biopsy at the Urology Clinic of Düzce University Medical Faculty between 01.01.2016-31.12.2018 were scanned. Demographic data of patients who met the inclusion criteria, urine tests taken before and after the procedure, urine and blood cultures, and antibiotics used before and after the procedure were recorded. Results: In stent-related procedures, there was reproduction in urine culture in 15.9% of patients after treatment, 78.1% of patients did not reproduce, and 6% of patients had no urine culture after the procedure. In the urine culture, the most common microorganism Escherichia coli was identified as the second most common microorganism Enterococcus spp. It was found that ceftriaxone was the most preferred in prophylaxis before urinary stenting. A positive correlation was found between urinary stent attachment time and urine culture growth.(r=0,450 p<0,001). The prostate biopsy patients had a growth in 8.4% urine culture after the procedure, 36.4% of patients did not reproduce. Urine culture was not taken from 55.2 % of the patients after the procedure. The most common microorganism in the urine culture was E. coli, the second most common microorganism, Enterococcus spp. The most used reatment before the biopsy was gentamicin + ciprofloxacin as a prophylactic antibiotic . Conclusion: In our study, we found that the risk of urinary tract infections increased after stent procedures and prostate biopsy, similar to studies in literature.
