Prof. Dr. Musa ÇİFÇİAbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the treasures of written active vocabulariesof 5 th , 8 th and 11 th grade primary school students in the center of the province of Uşak.Randomly selected 5 th , 8 th and 11 th grade 270 primary school students involved to thisstudy and they were encouraged to write a text related to their diaries (memoris),explaining a proverb or free-style writing (journal entry). 270 student composition textswere collected from the student writings. The words written by students were tried toclassified at the base of student grade level, gender, and students? socio-economiclevels. The performance of each grade level and socio-economic groups wereindividually evaluated. With this study, it was attempted to get information aboutprimary school students? vocabulary treasures. The common words used by studentswere found out and compared with a previous similar study conducted by HayriyeÜnsal.In this study, 30464 words were detected from 270 student compositions texts. Only2567 words were unique words and the remaining 27897 words were somehowsynonyms of these words. According to grade levels, the usage of these words was 6740(5th grades), 9284 (8th grades), 14440 (11th grades). Between 5th and 8th grades based ontheir socio-oconomic levels, the students coming from low-level socio-economic groupsused more words than those students coming from upper upper-level socio-economicgroups. According to students?genders, the vocabulary treasures of female students hadmore than those of male students.
