Socio spatial segregation of high income groups The case of Angora Houses in Bilkent Ankara

Previously, in the urban literature urbanisation, rural-urban migration, integration, squatter problems were discussed, but now globalisation and peak capitalism became sovereign power of the cities. Within this globalisation process, class segregation, social stratification problems and socio-spatial effects of these problematic came to order. At the beginning, the segregation problems showed itself with squatters and slums in the urban area. But nowadays there are many new and deeper questions in our cities, such as safety, urban intensity/crime, alternating of consumption culture and urban economy...etc. Because of these problems urban space is now facing not only the segregation of low income groups but also segregation of high income groups as well.One of the important question of our cities; segregation in other words excluding ?others?, is now became desire of creating a new utopia, purely new life style, by high income groups. This new utopia which is insulated from urban area is behind borders/gates and they are taking great precautions against ?others?.Based on this research, segregation of high income groups will be assessed in the case of differentiated urban space in the socio-spatial segregation. In this context, world and Turkish experiences will be analysed. Within the context of socio-spatial segregation; gated communities and residents of these communities of Ankara will be examined.Segregation, social stratification, structures of segregation, and its explicit and implicit effects to the urban space and to urban-dwellers, their new consumption patterns in urban area will be examined with theoretical framework and past-present examples. After finishing the theoretical framework research, with the light of diagnosis, questionnaires will be sent out in the chosen area, where the high income groups live in Ankara.With the findings of survey, which made in the sampling area, how this sampling group participates to socio-spatial segregation will be explicated. Spatial choices, behaviours in the city and consumption habits of this group will be examined, and also effects of urban policies will be analysed to segregation in the city and to the sampling group.
