A research study on effects of gifted diagnosed students' various perct

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of "gifted label" on gifted students' perceptions. The study also included a comparison by gender, grade, number of siblings, birth order, and educational status of parents. Participants of the study were 251 fifth and sixth grade students from four public schools and two science and art centers in Kaman and Kırşehir in Turkey. Of the total sample, 123 students were average students and had no identification before, 128 students were identified as gifted and were attending science and art centers. Scale for Gifted Labeling Effects (SGLE) was used to investigate students' perceptions. The SGLE consists of 24 items and three subscales: self-perception, perception of parents' attitudes, perceptions of friends' attitudes. Independent sample t test, two factor ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation were used to analyse data. The findings showed that there existed no statistically significant differences in two groups` self - perceptions, perception of parents' attitudes, and perceptions of friends' attitudes. The results were revealed that gifted girls' perceptions of parents' attitudes were statistically lower than gifted boys' perceptions of parents' attitudes. Parents' education status had negative correlation with gifted students' perceptions of parents' attitudes. Key Words: Gifted label, label effect
