Research shows that the world is still far away from the greenhouse gas emission target set for 2030. Failure to take serious measures against this situation will cause many environmental problems, especially climate change, to increase their impact each year. Buildings have an important share in the formation of this situation with their construction-use-demolition processes. Therefore, sustainable architecture, which encourages the use of clean and renewable energy in buildings to reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and minimizes waste generation by using renewable and recyclable resources, and aims to do all of this while taking user comfort into account, is increasing its importance day by day. Facades that connect the building with its surroundings play an important role in reflecting the sustainable architectural concept in the design. Adaptive facades developed in this context have the potential to maximize the harmony of the building with its environment. In this thesis, based on the hypothesis that adaptive facades provide versatile sustainable contributions with different solution proposals to reduce the negative impacts of buildings on the environment, firstly, sustainable architecture is defined and its importance is emphasized by mentioning environmental risks. Then, the systems that provide the application diversity of adaptive facades are analysed and performance criteria are established by using green building certificates to evaluate the impact and versatility of the sustainable performance of the systems. The performance criteria and sample applications are analysed and evaluated. In this study, it is aimed to contribute to the widespread use of adaptive facades by raising awareness about their sustainable potential.
