From application to intellectual education – Three dimensions in the first era of tafsir

In this thesis, exegetical activities in the early period of exegesis, from practice to intel-lectual act, are examined in three dimensions. The exegetical activities of the Quran are dis-cussed in three sections, taking into account the textualization history of the Quran. In the first section, the events that took place in the society before the revelation; Stories, customs, traditions, and cultural elements of the society constitute examples of actual tafsir. In addi-tion, during the period of revelation, the events experienced by the Prophet and his compan-ions mentioned in the text of revelation are also the materials of actual tafsir. The transfer of the nass into social life, the changes it brought about in individual and social life, and the events that occurred as a result of the revelation were also examined as actual tafsir materials in understanding the verses. In the second section, the oral narration of the events that took place during the formation of the text of the Quran is examined. That Allah asking and an-swering questions in advance in order to explain a matter and give information, the answers to the questions asked to the Prophet by revelation, the explanations he made while conveying the revealed verses, and the recounting of memories related to the incidents that were the sub-ject of revelation are examined as oral exegesis materials. In the third section, the notes and short explanations regarding the exegesis written by the companions on their personal copies of the Quran are discussed as book exegesis materials and examples from the Surahs Fatiha and Baqara are given.
