Effect of TWO different methods applied on pain and anxiety in children with peripheral vascular opening

Aim: This study was carried out to determine the effects of two different methods applied during peripheral vascular access in the pediatric emergency department on pain and anxiety in children. Material and Methods: The research is randomized controlled and experimental type. The sample of the study consisted of children who volunteered and applied to the Pediatric Emergency Service of Manisa Celal Bayar University Hafsa Sultan Hospital between January 2022 and February 2022 (n=105). Participants were divided into three equal groups, two experimental and one control group. Experimental Group 1 consisted of children who would receive parental support during the procedure. Experimental 2 Group consisted of children who used distraction cards by the researcher during the procedure. The routine procedure of the clinic was applied to the control group during the peripheral vascular access procedure. "Children's Introduction Information Form", "Wong-Baker Facial Expression Rating Scale", "Child Fear and Anxiety Scale", "Distracting Cards" were used to collect data. Results: In the study, a statistically significant difference was found when the mean WB-YIDO scores of the children were compared between the groups (p<0.05). The children in the control group had higher WB-YIDO score averages than the other groups. In the study, a statistically significant difference was found when the mean scores of the children's CSAS during the procedure were compared between the groups (p<0.05). The children in the control group had a higher mean score on CSAS compared to the other groups. Conclusion: It was found that distraction cards and parental support practices were effective in reducing the pain and anxiety of children during the peripheral vascular access procedure.
