Landfill site selection of Antalya city using remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems

Abstract (EN)

The study aims to select the suitable landfill site using geographical information systems (GIS) and multi criteria decision methods for Antalya. With approximately 1,2 million population, Antalya is the fifth biggest city in Turkey. It has the highest population growth rate in Turkey. Because of the fact that Antalya is a touristic place, it is important to select a proper landfill area in terms of its effects on the future of the city. Study area is approximately 20.723 km2 In this study, 12 parameters were used. These are viewshed (visibility from the roads), distance to road, distance to population density, precipitation, elevation, aspect, slope, earthquake zone, distance to fault lines, landslide density, and permeability. The definitely improper areas were masked out at the beginning of the study as the mask layer contains sections such as protected areas and water resources. The resultant data was computed in GIS environment by using Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) method for every one of the input parameters. As a result of the study, potential areas for landfill were classified. Five classes were generated. Due to that the large size of the study area, it was divided into three parts as east, central and west, and these three parts were also classified. With this study, data for a reliable planning was produced for decision makers. In the wake of this study, whole Antalya area was classified as the Eastern, Central and Western Region, and 2 different models were generated from the selected sites for the 35-year period waste.
