Evaluation of students with distance education experience on the level of motivation on science learning and their opinions on motivation-online education

Motivation in science education is an important factor that enables students to actively participate in the learning process, focus their attention and strive to achieve learning goals. Motivated students tend to be more active, creative and productive. The importance of motivation is to enable students to make more progress in the learning process and achieve higher academic success. In this study, it is aimed to compare the motivation of secondary school students studying in private schools and public schools about science lesson. The research in which the explanatory sequential mixed design model, one of the mixed research designs, was used; In the 2021-2022 academic year, it was conducted with a total of 218 secondary school students, 133 of which were state schools and 85 were private schools, in the district of Çubuk, Ankara. While the data obtained from the motivation scale for science learning were used in the quantitative part of the research, the data obtained from the semi-structured interviews conducted with randomly selected secondary school students, 5 public schools and 5 private schools, were used in the qualitative part. In the analysis of quantitative data, descriptive statistics such as arithmetic mean and standard deviation and predictive statistical techniques such as Independent Sample t-test were used. Content analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. According to the quantitative data results obtained from the research; While there is no significant difference between public and private schools in terms of science education motivation in distance education, it has been determined that the factors affecting the motivation of students studying in public and private schools vary as a result of qualitative data. The most striking factors affecting students' motivation were determined as the differences in the use of laboratories depending on class size and economic conditions in two types of school, and the frequency of experiments. In the last part of the study, some suggestions were made depending on the results of the research.
