The comparison of long neck bağlama and tanbur in terms of structural and performance characteristics

Turkish music which has a long-standing history has reached today by passing various stages of change/development over time and varying with a very rich basis. It is possible to say that there has been a constant change/development at the subgenres of Turkish music which extend its scope dynamically beyond being static. Turkish music which incorporates a great number of instruments like not only Turkish folk music but also classic Turkish music instruments with their specific performance characteristics has a considerable richness especially in terms of musical diversity. This study focused on the comparisons between long neck baglama and tanbur which a significant place for Turkish music in terms of structural and performance characteristics, and focused on the determination similar and different parts of these two instruments in the light of the findings. Of the descriptive research methods, survey method was used in this study. Accordingly, related literature was reviewed, various personal interviews were conducted with the experts in the field. Following major results were obtained with this study: long neck baglama and tanbur have similarities in terms of types of trees used in bowl, lid and neck (sap), in addition tuning peg (burgu) and parts of tuning peg (burgu); there are significant differences in terms of materials and length of the spectrum; the fifth finger which has a crucial role in the performance of baglama is never used in tanbur instrument; two analyzed instruments perform especially vibrato technique.
