SUMMARYSubject: Determination of the amount of resveratrol on the tissues of liver, lung, kidney and heart of rats that were fed with resveratrol for a long timeStudent?s Name and Surname: Fatma Esra KatırcıoğluConsultant: Prof. Dr. Fatma AkarDepartment: The department of PharmacologyYear: 2007Status: M.S. ThesisResveratrol is a naturally occuring polyphenolic compund which is found in botanicalsources especially in grapes and peanuts. Several experimental studies have shownthat the purified or synthetic form of resveratrol shows potent vasodilatory, antithrombotic, antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects on human andlaboratory animals. In this study our aim is to compare the amounts of resveratrol ,which were given in drinking water for 21 days, in blood and several organs from maleand female rats. After this period, it was seen that, taking resveratrol did not have asignificant effect on the body weights of male and female rats. The amount of resveratrolin the samples of blood, heart, liver, lungs and kidneys taken from both genders weremeasured using HPLC/PDA . It was found that resveratrol mostly presented in liver andkidney tissues while, the amount was below the detectable limits in heart , lungs andblood. The levels of resveratrol detected didn?t show a statiscally difference in betweenmale and female rats. The results we obtained show that the bioavailability rate ofresveratrol is low. Accumulation of resveratrol in kidney and liver can be interpreted thatit can be stored in the body so, consuming red wine for a long time makes theconcentration of resveratrol reach the effective biological levels.
