The accurate and precise localization of an emitting source has applications in a number of fields including wireless communications, military, surveillance, geophysics and navigation systems. This thesis investigates various existing source localization methods based on time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements for the case (i) when the knowledge of the sensor positions is assumed to be perfect and exact without any uncertainties in them and for the case (ii) when sensor position errors are assumed to be present and taken into consideration when formulating the source localization algorithms. The relative localization performance of each method is studied by comparing the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) and Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds (CRLBs) of the corresponding resulting estimates for various sensor distribution scenarios and simulation conditions. Moreover, the theoretical analysis predicting the significant improvement in localization performance when sensor position errors are considered in contrast to the case when they are ignored, is corroborated through simulation.
