Abstract (EN)
INTRODUCTION and OBJECTIVE: Research was done, for the purpose of the role of education was given to intensive care nurses in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). MATERIALS and METHOD: Quantitative research method (single group, pretest, final test, experimental design) was used in the research. The research consisted of 58 nurses who is working in the intensive care units of a state hospital in Sakarya between at August 2014 and at January 2015. FINDINGS: In the study, it is not found any statistically significant difference among the VAP information scores which is according to sex, marital status, age, duration of study, education level, income level, years of intensive care study and how many intensive care units are employed in the study. ( in order of ; , Z=0.960, p=0.337; Z=0.429, p=0.668; 2= 2.799, p=0.424; 2=3.186, p=0.364; 2= 3.889, p=0.143; 2= 6.573, p=0.087; Z=2.143, p=0.342). In addition to this, It was seen that the knowledge scores of the nurses showed a statistically significant difference according to whether they had taken VAP education before they had working. (Z=2.792; p=0.005). It was determined that the questionnaire score of the nurses who get the education of VAP was higher than who not get the education of VAP. When the VAP information score before the VAP training was given to the nurses by the researcher and the VAP knowledge score after the training was compared, nurses' knowledge of the post-education VAP information scores, was found to be statistically higher than pre-training median (Z=6.631; p<0.001). Again, according to the observational checklist, it was determined that the compliance scores of the nurses for VAP treatment were statistically significantly higher than the pre-training scores before the VAP training. (Z=6.624; p<0.001). CONCLUSION: It was determined that nurses who are an important part of the intensive care unit in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia had effective training on VAP prevention practices and that their practices improved significantly. Key Words: Ventilator associated pneumonia, intensive care, nurse, education, role.
