An examination of the character of Violetta in Verdi's Opera La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi is considered one of the leading opera composers of the 19th century. His ability to create engaging and simple works has ensured his prominent place in the world of opera. Verdi's opera "La Traviata" is recognized as one of the innovative works of its time due to its creative techniques and realistic elements. The dramatic and musical structure of the character of Violetta in particular has captured the attention of critics and music lovers. This study focuses on examining the character of Violetta in Verdi's opera "La Traviata" in detail, taking into account the general dramaturgical and musical structure of the opera. Additionally, Violetta's concept of freedom will be analyzed by comparing it with Nietzsche's concept of morality. This comparison will be used as a tool to gain a deeper understanding of Violetta's character. The aim of this study is to provide a new perspective on the historical and artistic value of Verdi's opera "La Traviata" by examining various aspects of the character of Violetta, which is an important element of the opera. The first section of the thesis analyzes the state of opera in the 18th and 19th centuries, examines the lives of Verdi and Nietzsche, discusses concepts of freedom and morality, and focuses on Violetta's pursuit of freedom. The second section provides a detailed examination of "La Traviata" opera and the character of Violetta, comparing them with Nietzsche's philosophy of morality.
