Assesment of the performance of the Ziraat Bank branches in the Antalya district via the data envelopment analysis

In our country, the banking sector is developing quickly, and this development brings about an increasing competition in the sector. The banking system works in a way that it sells money to the customers and buys money from then in return, which makes the banks to become like a business establishment. This is why, to not to stay behind in the competition in the sector and provide better service to the customers in the fastest and most efficient way, banks are tended to enlarge their web in the country by opening new branches every year.For the sake of the maximum profit in these new branches, banks have to conduct periodical capacity usage analyses to inspect the efficiency and formulate their future management strategies accordingly.Data Envelopment Analysis is an important tool developed to measure the activities of the organizational entities like banking braches with multiply varied inputs and outputs. This analysis method works to find out the best input- output components. Because of this feature, it has the potential of being a strong systemic decision support tool for the bank directors.In this study, the performances of the Ziraat Bank branches in the Antalya District are assessed. The data set used in this study is compiled from the mentioned banks? 2009 year, March, June and September months? statistics.In the process of converting the available inputs to outputs, the braches with the maximum efficiency are called ?active branches.? In this study, the inactive branches and the branches, which these inactive branches should take as a role model in becoming active, are defined; the inactive branches are guided about how to become active. In addition, the timely change in the activity is measured by the Malmquist TFP (Malmquist Total Factor Productivity) index and then interpreted accordingly.The relative activity measuring technique used in this study is the Data Envelope Analysis, which is provided by the DEAP 2.1 program designed by Coelli, TJ.
