Investigation of microstructural section sensitivity of vermicular graphite cast iron

Abstract (EN)

Vermicular graphite cast iron is the most recent member of the family of iron-based alloys. In recent years, vermicular has attracted a great deal of attention in the industry-especially in the automotive industry – and academia due to its features and potential areas of usage. Due to increasing demand for engine power and torque, the walls of engine blocks and cylinder heads are become strengthend. Since the deficiency of heat transfering properties of spheroidal cast iron, in engine block and cylinder head production, the lighter vermicular graphite iron than lamellar graphite iron may be used replace of it. In present paper, tundish crucible treatment and single treatment methods were applied and their efficiency was compared formation. In the tundish process, it was observed that the microstructure was more uniform than the microstructure obtained by the single treatment methods. Metallurgical and mechanical properties of the vermicular graphite alloy were investigated and it was evaluated as a parts of sections and the results of a trial run are presented. According to these results, cooling was an effective parameter, thinner sections of the spherical structure increased vermicular structure is reduced and vermicular structure was observed more clearly in thick sections.
