The role of the viruses in epithelial atypia of the seminal vesicles

Atypical cellular changes that are seen after the 4th decade in seminal vesi-cles epithelia increase with age. These atypical cells are sometimes found in prostate needle biopsies, urinary cytology specimens and cervicovaginal smears and cause different problems in diagnosis. Intranuclear pseudoinclusions commonly accom-pany these atypical cellular changes. The purpose of our study is to diagnose the as-sociation of these changes with age and viruses.Autopsy and resection material of seminal vesicles are obtained from 60 cases whose mean age is 59 (ranging between 40-95). These materials are stained with routine hematoxylins and eosine. Presence of atypia and intranuclear inclusion are examined histopathologically. All cases are examined for EBV, BKV, SV40 and HSV-2 viruses by polymerase chain reaction.All cases were divided in respect to age. 30 cases were below 60 years old and 30 cases were 60 or above 60 years old. By histopathologic examination, atypia is found in 81.7 % (49/60) and intranuclear inclusions is found in 41.7 % (25/60) of cases. By using polymerase chain reaction, EBV is found in 51.7 % (31/60), BKV in 25 % (15/60), SV40 in 35 % (21/60) and HSV-2 in 18.3 % (11/60) of cases.Polymerase chain reaction results showed that no statistically significant dif-ference is found between viruses in respect to atypia, intranuclear inclusion and dis-trubition according to age (p>0.05). While association of carcinoma and EBV is found statistically significant (p=0.02), no such an association is found with other viruses and carcinoma. But in respect to distrubition of atypia between age groups, negative correlation is found in advanced age (p=0.038).In conclusion, we determined that no association is found between atypia of seminal vesicle epithelia and viruses. But contrary to other studies supporting the increase of atypia with age, we found that atypia is more common in middle age group when compared to advanced age.Key words: Seminal Vesicles, epithelial atypia, EBV, BKV, SV40, HSV-2
