The effect of multimedia supported patient trainingon postoperative pain and anxiety in patients with videothoracoscopy

Abstract (EN)
Preoperative multimedia supported patient information has positive effects on postoperative pain, anxiety and even postoperative complications. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of multimedia supported information on postoperative pain and anxiety in addition to verbal and written information in patients who underwent VATS. Fifty patients who underwent VATS were included in the study and divided into two groups. Both groups received baseline STAT-T test pre- and postoperative STAI-S test. About 6 minutes of information video was shown to the multimedia information group (MIG) and the STAI-S test was repeated. Demographic data, surgical features, PFT values, vital signs, VAS scores and analgesic consumption of the patients were recorded. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic data, surgical features and PFT values. There was a significant difference between STAI-T, preop STAI-S and postop STAI-S scores (p=0.002, p=0.001, p<0.0001, respectively). Postoperative STAI-S scores decreased significantly in the control group, but this change was not observed in MIG (p=0.010, p=0.656, respectively). Significant changes in the MIG were found in the pulse parameter of vital signs (p<0.0001). There were no significant differences in VAS scores and analgesic doses between the groups. When the 3- day change in the groups was observed, a significant decrease was observed in all of the groups, but the change in the dose of Tramadol was not significant in the control group (p=0.115). In our study, we found that although pre-operative multimedia information had no effect on anxiety, it was partially effective on postoperative pain.
