Investigation of the prevalence of adenovirus and rotavirus from the causes of viral gastroenterits by ELISA and card test method

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the prevalence of Adenovirus and Rotavirus, which are causes of viral gastroenteritis, by ELISA and cassette test method. Stool samples taken from patients who were sent to Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital Central Laboratory Microbiology Unit with a preliminary diagnosis of gastroenteritis from various polyclinics and clinics were used. ELISA and Cassette test were used in the study. Rapidan Tester brand Adenovirus and Rotavirus tests were used as cassette test, and RIDASCREEN® kits were used as ELISA tests. In our study, stool samples were taken from a total of 92 patients, of which 48 (52.1%) were male and 44 (47.8%) belonged to female patients. The ages of the patients evaluated within the scope of our study ranged from 0 to 81 years, and the mean age was calculated as 16.52±20.05 years. 62 of the patients were aged 18 years or younger, and the rate of patients aged 18 years and over was 32.6%. Adenovirus positivity and Rotavirus positivity were detected in 4.3% of stool samples evaluated by ELISA test. The cassette test results were found to be 100% compatible with the ELISA test. In our study, according to ELISA and Cassette test results, 2.3% of women and 6.2% of men were found to be positive for Adenovirus, while 31.8% of women and 37.5% of men were positive for Rotavirus. There was no significant difference in terms of Adenovirus and Rotavirus positivity according to gender. When examined according to age, it was found that Adenovirus positivity could be seen at all ages and did not differ significantly. While Adenovirus positivity was not detected in foreign nationals in our study, Rotavirus positivity was detected in 2 (50%) of 4 foreign nationals. Adenovirus positivity was detected in 4.6% and Rotavirus positivity in 34.1% of Turkish patients. Considering the results obtained from our study, it can be said that the ELISA method and the Cassette test are 100% compatible with each other in terms of detecting Adenovirus and Rotavirus, therefore the cassette test can be used reliably in terms of ease of use and more affordable price.
