Art Nouveau in Vienna and Otto Wagner

In this study, the lives and the works of Otto Wagner, the representative of the Art Nouveau movement in Vienna after the Industrial Revolution, will be examined. As a productive architect of his era, Wagner's contribution to Vienna's changing urban structure in the 19 th century is very important. In cheapter 3, the changes that Vienna has had since the beginning of the 19 th century have been given. In the nineteenth century, Vienna was a city which was designed by industrialization and urbanization, and one of the fastest growing one in Europe. Franz Joseph decided that modernization of Vienna required the demolition of its medieval fortifications. And, in its place, the construction of a grand boulevard called Ringstrasse, was started. At that time Otto Wagner was at the beginning of his career. Although he designed a few historical buildings in Ringstrasse boulevard, later years, Wagner's approach evolved into the functional style, which would evolve out of the technological achievements of the age. Wagner was succesful in major competitions. As a result, he started to work in the development of Vienna's urban planning and infrastructure for the new districts of the city. Technical and constructional functionality were used by Wagner for his projects by using high aesthetic criteria. Façade of Majolica House shows his relation with Vienna Secession, founded by his students, which he joined in 1899. With the Post Office Savings Bank and Church at Steinhof, it can be said that, he gained an important role of European Architecture around 1900.
