Abstract (EN)
II. ABSTRACTFree Radicals in Body Dysmorphic DisorderIn the present study, the role of free radicals in the etiopathogenesis of bodydysmorphic disorder (BDD) was examined in patients with BDD who applied forreconstructive surgery. Thirty seven patients (24 males, 13 females) with BDD and25 healthy controls (15 males, 10 females) were enrolled in the study. In 33 percent of those, the occupations about their appearance persisted. Therest noted that their complaints decreased. The samples were obtained from venous vessels patients as using appropriatemethods malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dysmutase (SOD), glutationperoxidase (GSH-Px) and nitric oxide (NO) levels and nitrite/nitrate ratio weredetermined. In patients with BDD, male/female ratio was 2/1 and the mean age of washigher than expected. Serum GSH-Px and NO levels were higher than those ofhealthy controls (p<0.0001).In conclusion, we suggest that oxidative stress may be an ethiopathogeneticfactor in the occurrence of BDD.Key words: Body dysmorphic disorder, MDA, SOD, GSH-Px, NO.2
