The effect of motivational interviewing and education based on watson human care model on adherence to treatment, satisfaction and quality of life in adults receiving hemodialysis treatment

Objective: To evaluate the effect of motivational interviewing and education based on Watson Human Care Theory on adherence to treatment, satisfaction and quality of life in adults receiving hemodialysis treatment. Method: This study that single blinded randomized controlled experimental study, was conducted between April 2019-2020 with total of 60 patients included 32 intervention and 28 control groups who were receiving hemodialysis treatment in the Hemodialysis Unit of Akdeniz University Hospital. Data was collected with Patients Information Form, Hemodialysis Patients Fluid Control Scale, Diet Behaviour Scale of Hemodialysis Patients, Modified Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, Hemodialysis Session Participation Form, Watson Caritas Patient Score, Motivational Interviewing Evaluation Form, Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 Scale. The intervention group was given 15 minute motivational interviewing for four month period, one session education at the first motivational interviewing and educational booklet based on Watson Human Care Theory. The control group was given routine hemodialysis treatment and nursing care in the hemodialysis unit. The statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 25.0 software package. Results: It was determined that the mean scores of adherence to fluid restriction, diet, drug management and the quality of life in the sub-dimension of effects of kidney disease increased in the intervention group compared to the control group after motivational interviewing and education based on Watson Human Care Theory (p<0.05). It was observed that the individuals in the intervention group were satisfied with the applied care and motivational interviewing. It was found that a significant correlation between fluid restriction, diet, drug management and quality of life (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the study, it was found that motivational interviewing and education based on Watson Human Care Theory improved adherence to treatment, satisfaction and quality of life in adults receiving hemodialysis treatment.
