Effects of nursing care based on Watson' theory of human caring on the infertility treatment women' distress, anxiety and coping styles

Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing care program based on Watson? Theory of Human Caring on Caring on the anxiety, coping and distress women during the treatment process and when the treatment fails.Method: This research employed a experimental, randomized controlled study, pretest-posttest design with repeated measures. This study carried out in a private hospital IVF center. Nursing care based on Watson?s Theory of Human Caring was applied to the intervention group. The number of infertile women receiving treatment was 86 in total, 45 in the intervention group and 41 in the control group. Follow-ups of 32 infertile women from intervention group and 36 infertile women from control group continued for another one month. Data were collected through Personal Information Form, Dıstress Scale, Spielberger?s State/Trait Anxiety Inventory, Ways of Coping Questionnaire and Watson Caritas Patient Score. The analysis of data was conducted using t-test, chi-square and repeated measures analysis of varianceFindings: Statistically significant decrease were detected between anxiety, distress and statistically significant increase of coping style of women under going infertility treatment in the intervention than control groups. Likewise, statistically significant decrease were determined between anxiety, distress and statistically significant increase of coping style of women whose infertility treatments failed in the intervention than control groups.Conclusion: It was determined that nursing care based on Watson?s Theory of Human Caring led to decrease in the anxiety, distress and increase in the positive coping style of women during the infertility treatment and when the treatment failed.
