Creation of a web CBS-based cultural heritage inventory: The case of Trabzon

The widespread use of the Internet and the advancement of geographic information technology have combined to lead to the emergence of web-based Geographic Information Systems (Web GIS). Web GIS combines the capabilities of both GIS and the Internet, making it easier and faster to produce and present maps on the Internet. One of the areas where web-based map applications have an important use potential is tourism. Geographical Information Systems (GIS), when used in the web environment, offer important opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism practices, the discovery and protection of cultural heritage and the classification of the tourism inventory. Tourism has an important potential in the economy of Trabzon city. However, there are shortcomings in the management of geographical information about tourism. At this point, the creation of a web-based tourism inventory will support decision makers with up-to-date and reliable data in order to better recognize and promote the tourism potential, as well as monitor the change in tourism assets/activities and identify new types of tourism. In this study, it is aimed to present the cultural heritage inventory of Trabzon to the users on a Web-based geographical database with the basic design principles. In this way, it is aimed to collect tourism information managed by different institutions and organizations on a common platform and keep it up to date with the data that users will add. In addition, the virtual tour application, which has become quite widespread in recent years, is integrated into the design for a selected sample cultural object. The application for cultural heritage data carried out specifically for the province of Trabzon can be expanded to include other provinces and different tourism data if necessary. A test run conducted with real users has shown that the usability of the application performed is high. Along with this, constantly developing technology and user requests should be followed up and the updates that will be needed should be made in the future.
