From XIX. century to XXI. century Turkey Australia relations

This thesis looks in to the relationship between Australia and Ottoman Empire, later known as Democratic Republic of Turkey. After the start of World War I, Turks and Australians had the opportunity to get to know each other for the first time. What happened on this front was the basis of the relations between the two countries. Australia began to question British policies with the Battle of Gallipoli, and in the following years Australia followed an independent policy from the England. As a result of Çanakkale crisis between Turkey and England, England wanted Australia to send troops to Turkey, but Australia refused England's demand. In this way, Australia has taken an important step in relations with Turkey. In 1924, Australian Prime Minister Stanley Bruce's visit to Turkey has gained further momentum to the relations between Turkey and Australia. The visit of Australian Prime Minister has opened the door for other visits. However, until the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Australia in 1967, visits to Anzac graveyards in Gallipoli peninsula was the primary focus of bilateral treaties and relations. After the signing of the worker exchange agreement between the two countries, commerce and political dialogue between the two countries greatly increased. In the 1980's, attacks on the Turkish Consulate General and Melbourne Turkish consulate in Australia, relations between the two countries did not suffer a strong decline. In the 1990's, commercial and political relations between the two countries increased. Although there was a short-term crisis in 2005 due to road works on the Gelibolu Peninsula, the problem was solved without escalation. Australian tourist numbers on Turkish soil peaked due to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli and the number only increased in the following years creating a significant boon to inter-country commerce and political acumen. For this reason, the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli War was an important milestone in the relations between the two countries.
