Abstract (EN)

Sanjak studies have a great importance for the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire. This thesis examines the Timisoara Sanjak which was the pasha sanjak of the Timisoara Beylerbeyliği when it entered the Ottoman domination from 1552 until the end of the 16th century as the political, administrative, demographic and economic aspects. The absence of a comprehensive study on Timisoara, especially in Turkey, made it necessary to address the issues in question. The aim of the study is to reveal the administrative structure of the Ottoman Empire in the Hungarian geography by writing its history over a period of time. On the other hand, in our study, while referring to the sanjak details as the geographical unit, the socio-economic and religious structure of the societies living in this geography and their development within certain periods have been tried to be determined. The main source literature used in the research is the collection of certain documents and notebooks in the local archives. In the Ottoman sancak works, undoubtedly, the most important source of corpuscles is composed of the registries called Tahrir. In this thesis, while reviewing the sub-districts of Timisoara and its settlements belonging to these sub-districts in the framework of the information belonging to the period in Tahrir books, the socio-economic situation of these regions are being determined. Likewise, from other sources in our archives; many collections, such as; Muhimme books, müdevver books from the finance, cizye books have been used as the sources According to the Sanjak' tahrirs, in 1554 Tımısoara owned 17 sub-districts and 950 towns and villages that were subject to these sub-districts. These sub-districts were Tımışvar, Şemlik, Çakova, Pançova, Marcina, Felnak, Bozor, Bogca, İktar, Tırgovişta, Çerin, Facet, Monostor, Fırdına, Suydiya, Bozovar and Modava. In the Tahrir book dated back to the year of 1569 Modava was removed from the sub-district and became to be known as Sanjak. In our study; the population, quantity and distribution of these sub-districts according to demarcation counts were investigated. In our study, settlements were identified and mapped. On the other hand,it has been aimed to provide information about agricultural, commercial activities and livestock activities occurred in these settlements. One of the main points focused on in our study is the production activities and the taxation of the reayas. In this regard, all production activities of the sanjak were and government officials in each sanjak have been determined and how much tax has been charged by them have been studied, namely; we have tried to reveal the distribution of dirlik tax.
