Abstract (EN)

Art Nouveau, which means "New Art" in French, is an important art movement that influenced the whole world, especially Europe, at the end of the Nineteenth Century and the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Art Nouveau is intertwined with decorative arts due to its structure and emergence. In this sense, Art Nouveau showed itself in the best with jewelery and illustrations. The jewels of the period, with their surprising forms, are a rebellion and protest against the currents from the past, and they are original as if they came from a magnificent, fantastic and utopian reality in content. Organic forms, especially the whip forms, are accepted as hallmarks of Art Nouveau. Precious stones and metals carried clues that the coming new century will be different from the previous centuries, in this period when the visuality and visual effect, which denies its purely economic impartance. At the 1900 Paris International Fair, the representatives of the trend in jewelery design and production were masters such as René Lalique, Henri Vever, Cartier, Boucheron and their successor companies. As a result of the rapid decline of Art Nouveau with the First World War, Art Déco, which took its roots from various ancient civilizations, especially Egypt, was dominated by industrial production products that had penetrated into daily life and the machine aesthetics that followed. As a result of the social and political developments experienced after the Second World War, humanity started to re-establish an order and look at all institutions with a new eye. This view has also shown itself in art, and various art movements have emerged. The jewelery field did not stay away in this sense, and the American Studio Movement and the retro movement emerged in America with the works of various artists and the designs of jewelers in accordance with the reality of the period.
