Determining how many words are needed by the students who want to learn Turkish as a foreign language in order to be able to read and understand the books in the Turkish teaching sets

Turkish teaching sets in foreign language teaching are important for a student who wants to learn Turkish. Because the student who wants to learn a language firstly uses the Turkish teaching sets of TÖMER and various publishing houses in language courses. A student who wants to learn Turkish must first build his vocabulary. For this, it is inevitable to use books to expand the vocabulary and to bring new words to the individual's vocabulary. Knowing the words and phrases needed in teaching Turkish to foreigners is important for language learners to understand the texts they read. In this study, it was aimed to determine how many words a student should know in the frequency dictionaries in order to be able to read and understand the texts in the foreign language teaching sets. In this context, 10 textbooks at the A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels of the Izmir Turkish for Foreigners and Turkish for Foreigners Gazi language teaching sets were determined and examined as documents. Word frequencies were determined with the support of the "Simple Concordance 4,0,9" program, and word lists were prepared according to the levels of the books, by taking the criteria of the words in these compiled books as criteria in similar studies. The words in the books were compared in the dictionaries named "Word Frequency Dictionary of Written Turkish" (Göz, 2003) and "Turkish Frequency Dictionary: Basic Vocabulary for Learners" (Aksan, Aksan, Mersinli, & Demirhan, 2017) and it was determined to what extent they included the words in these dictionaries. As a result of the research, Izmir Turkish for Foreigners, 63240 working words, 12341 word types in the books in the Turkish teaching sets, Turkish Gazi for Foreigners, 28975 working words and 8439 word types in the books in the Turkish teaching sets were determined. For a student to understand the books in the Turkish for Foreigners Gazi language teaching set, the first 13000+ words in the frequency dictionary of Göz (2003) and the 5000+ words in the frequency dictionary of Aksan et al. It was determined that the first 14000+ words in the frequency dictionary of Ün (2003) and the 5000+ words in the frequency dictionary of Aksan et al. (2017) should be known and suggestions were made based on the findings.
