Transmission of culture on textbooks of teaching Turkish as a foreign language: New Hitit Turkish for Foreigners Textbook (Levels A1-A2)

Throughout this study, "The New Hitit Turkish for Foreigners Textbook (Levels A1-A2)" which is one of the textbooks used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, is studied in terms of cultural transmission. Textbooks are one of the widely used materials during teaching processes. Textbooks fitting to the appropriate level are important for the success of the teaching and learning processes. To that end, the characteristics of the textbooks used to teach Turkish to foreigners and the studies on the remarkable qualities of preparing textbooks are studied closely. The study is based on the scale, "Cultural items and sub-items reflecting on the texts" which is used by Okur and Keskin (2013). The suggested scale is studied and finalized by four specialist associates. The study is limited to the texts used in the twelve units of "The New Hitit A1-A2 (elementary level)", which also has elementary, intermediate and advanced level textbooks. This study is figured out as qualitative research. The data is collected by document analysis technic, which is a data collecting method in qualitative researches. As a result of the study, it is discovered that the sample textbook is adequate in terms of cultural transmission; however, it has some inadequate parts. The study detects that the sample textbook looks adequate in terms of cultural transmission; however, it has some inadequate elements. It is concluded that the distribution of cultural items in the textbook is not balanced, and despite including the target culture and other different cultures adequately, the comparison of target and source cultures is not sufficiently involved in the book. This study aims at providing data for the future teaching materials and at contributing to the field.
