Vocabulary teaching in teaching Turkish as foreign language by means of e-learning

The aim of this research is to determine how Turkish vocabulary teaching practices and the presentations of cultural elements should be carried out by revealing the characteristics of vocabulary teaching presented in the English and Turkish language teaching practices by means of e ? learning. The relational scanning model was used in this research, in which the domestic and foreign examples of the vocabulary teaching studies were analyzed by means of E ? learning. The relational scanning model aims to determine the covariance and/or its degree among two or more variables. According to this model, the websites that focus on English language teaching in Britain, the websites that focus on Turkish language teaching in Britain and the websites that focus on Turkish language teaching in Turkey were analyzed in terms of vocabulary teaching and the characteristics of their vocabulary teaching practices were explained in the conclusion part. The research was carried out through two stages as the vocabulary teaching practices in the websites that focus on English and Turkish languages by means of E ? Learning in Britain and the comparisons among the vocabulary teaching practices in the websites that focus on Turkish language teaching by means of E ? Learning in Turkey. The conceptual framework of the research consisted of the techniques and methods in language teaching, vocabulary teaching practices in the books and in the classes and the activities in this field. The vocabulary teaching parts of the websites that focus on teaching English and Turkish languages in Britain were analyzed at the first stage. The contents and visual elements of the websites were overemphasized. The websites that focus on language teaching practices by means of E ? learning in Turkey were analyzed at the second stage. In addition to the contents and the visual elements of the websites, the presentations of cultural elements in the websites were also evaluated. From the analysis carried out, it was found out that there was a high frequency in using the cultural elements and in the diversity of the vocabulary teaching activities on the websites that focus on English language teaching. The vocabulary teaching practices in English were collected under the titles of 'teaching' and 'exercise' and the user was constantly faced with the vocabulary to be taught. However, this vocabulary was aimed to be taught through games at the stage of exercise. It was found out that the elements belonging to England and English culture were always used in the English language teaching websites. Using many materials and visual elements related to 'Christmas' in the new year topic and using visual elements of 'Halloween Day' in the vocabulary games are some examples of that situation. It was found out that the vocabulary parts of the websites that focus on Turkish language teaching had deficiencies in terms of visual elements and contents. These deficiencies led to the deficiencies in the presentations of cultural elements. The suggestions related to the presentations of cultural elements and to increasing the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching in the Turkish language teaching websites were offered in the light of the analysis.
