Use of song in developing Turkish vocabulary of foreign students

The purpose of this research; to determine the effect of the use of songs in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language on the academic success of the student and improving vocabulary. The study, which constitutes the data of the research, was applied to a sample group of 36 students, who are studying at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Turkish Teaching Application and Research Center. In the data collection process of the research, five activities were formed, which consisted of creating a space filling, puzzle and word list for two Turkish songs selected by the researcher, taking into account the expert opinions. The sample group was homogeneously divided into two groups as control and experimental group. The vocabularies in the designed activities were given to the control group through plain expression; The experiment group was tried to be taught with songs. At the end of the activities, a question was asked whether they found the application useful for the experimental group and the research was evaluated in the light of the students' answers to this question. In the research, which the mixed research method was used, the quantitative data of the research were compared with the equated groups posttest model; qualitative data were presented by semi-structured interview technique. The quantitative data obtained were described with the t-test for dependent samples via the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 22.0 package program; qualitative data were interpreted by content analysis method. As a result of the research, it has been concluded that the use of songs in teaching Turkish as a foreign language improves the vocabulary of the students and besides, the students who make up the sample of the research find the use of songs in foreign language teaching and their interest in Turkish music increases.
