Visualizing energy consumption of Yalova University with a feasibility research for using renewable energy

Abstract (EN)
Energy is the main source of various life sustaining function; such as communication, transportation, heating, cooling and lightning. This leads an increasement of the demand for energy. In order to answer this increasing demand, there is a tendancy for alternative ways of producing energy. As a result of this situation, the share of renewable energy in this stage is crucial. In this research, energy consumption of Yalova University is examined annually. Alternative energy sources and efficiency potentials are discussed in order to reduce the electrical consumption and natural gas use. Within consideration of Yalova University Central Campus location and environmental conditions of the area, it is suggested that with ground source heat pump natural gas consumption and with wind and sun energy systems electrical energy consumption could be reduced. In order to support this suggestion, calculations, analysis and feasibility report are introduced in this thesis. First of all, the heating and cooling loads are calculated by using temperature information of air and soil taken from Yalova Provincial Directorate of Meteorology and architectural drawings of the buildings. These loads are visualized in accordance with their distribution in the campus with energy mapping method. To provide the energy required for heating and cooling load of the buildings in Yalova University Central Campus, ground souce heat pump is proposed. Calculations and analysis for installation and configuration of the heat pump are done. Necessary equipment for ground source heat pump are selected with the capacity calculations. And the payback time analysis is presented containing the amount of first investment, savings from natural gas and increase of electrical energy cost. Moreover, renewable energy soruces are examined to contribute power supply in Yalova University Central Campus. As a convenient source in Yalova province, wind and sun energy is the main focus in this research. Calculations regarding establishing wind and sun energy supplying systems are introduced by making use of infromation taken from Yalova Provincial Directorate of Meteorology. As a result of calculations, total cost analysis, first investment costs and payback time are submitted. In short, this thesis contains suggested methods in order to reduce the energy consumption in Yalova University Central Campus and the benefits for the University and the national economy with recovery are presented. Lastly, the environmental effects of the systems are included.
