Investigation of burn-specific pain-anxiety level of patients treated in the burn unit

Investigation of Burn-Specific Pain-Anxiety Level of Patients Treated in the Burn Unit This study was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study planned to determine the level of pain-anxiety related to burns in patients treated at the Burns Unit of Bursa City Hospital. The research was carried out in Bursa City Hospital Burns Unit between February 2022 and June 2022. Patients who were 18 years of age and older, who could communicate, who could speak and understand Turkish, who did not have a psychiatric diagnosis, and 154 patients with a 90% reliability and 5% margin of error, were included in the study. Information about the patients was collected by face-to-face interview method using the patient identification form and the Burn-Specific Pain and Anxiety Scale (PAAS). The data collected within the scope of the research were analyzed with the IBM SPSS 24 program. Descriptive data in the study were given as number, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The distribution of scores on the burn-specific pain anxiety scale (BSAAS) was evaluated with normality analysis. According to the skewness and kurtosis coefficients (±1.5), the data were found to be normally distributed and parametric tests were used. Independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and correlation (Pearson's correlation) were used to examine the relationships between variables. In further analysis, Bonferroni Post-hoc test was used. According to the results of the study, it was found that the duration of stay in the burn unit and the total body burn surface showed positive and significant correlations with BAA, respectively, r = .250, .313, p < .05. Accordingly, it was found that as the duration of stay in the burn unit and total body burn surface increased, burn-specific pain and anxiety also increased. It was found that AAW showed significant differences according to the degree of burn, t = 2.787, p < .05. Accordingly, it was found that patients with second + third or third degree burns had higher BCAA levels compared to patients with first + second or second degree burns. The mean value of the total score of the patients from the burn-specific pain anxiety scale was found to be 42.41±16.76. Keywords: Burn Pain, Anxiety, Burn Unit
