Burn patients' expectation from nurses

Burn is a kind of painful trauma that requires a long period of treatment and also changes patients body image. For this reason, the nursing care of burn patients is much important. In this study in order to provide quality care to the burned patients, patient?s expectations from nurses were tried to be established. In this study, patients? expectations were evaluated on 101 patients with burn in Ministry of Health Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital Burn Service and Gulhane Military Medical Academy Education and Research Hospital Burn Center. A questionnaire which was developed by the researcher was used for collecting data. The questions on the questionnaire were classified into four groups to evaluate the patients? expectations about communication, information, care and discharge. The data was evaluated by using SPSS 12 package software. To compare results between two groups Mann Whitney U test, to compare results between three groups Kruskal Wallis test with Bonferroni?s correction were used.In our study, results showed that patients with chronical disease, patients who do not work, patients who have termal burn injury and females have higher expectation from nurses about communication. We found that patients who have termal burn injury and patients who do not work have higher expectation from nurses about information. We also find that patients who do not work, patients whose head and neck, upper extremity, hand and perine were burned, patients who stay in intensive care unit, patients whose postburn days were less than seven, patients who have 45 percent and more burn area, patients who have both 2nd and 3th degree burn have higher expectation about care.Key Words: Burn patients, burn nursing, patient expectation.
