Abstract (EN)

The development of the industrial sector in Turkey and in the world plays an important role for both producers and consumers. Therefore, precision-built commercial and industrial structures were built to meet needs by using different building materials by various purposes and methods, and these structures were desired to serve for many years. While constructing these structures that require advanced engineering knowledge and experience, many parameters were considered. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect of soil-structure interaction on dynamic behavior of industrial chimneys, which have an important place for Turkey and businesses. Thus, a reinforced concrete industrial chimney that was strictly damaged/destroyed by the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake occurred in northwestern Turkey was selected as an example. The dynamic behavior of this selected structure on different soil types (hard, medium and soft) was numerically studied by ANSYS finite element program. From the works done, structure's dynamic characteristics (mode shapes and frequency) and the stresses, strains and displacements occurring in the structure were gained and studied comparatively. In this study, the importance of boundary conditions and soil-structure interaction in the dynamic behavior of concrete industrial chimneys was emphasized.
