Abstract (EN)

In free radical chain polymerization, the effect monomer and the initiator propertiesto the monomer conversion and molecular weight is significant. Thus, the study isconducted in order to examine the effect of monomer and initiator properties to thepolymerization of styrene with benzoyl peroxide initiator in toluene in the fed batchreactor with cooling jacket. In this study, the effect of initiator concentration to theexpected molecular weight and conversion and the effect of input temperature of themonomer current are analyzed in a fed batch polymerization reactor. In this study, optimal initiator concentration and flow rate at different conditions forthe semi batch polymerization reactor was obtained by applying Hamiltonianmethod. Also, theoretical conversion data are compared with experimentalconversion data. The experimental results of the batch system are also compared with the results ofthe experiments of the fed batch system.According to the results of the study that as step affect was given, the change of theinitiator residual effects the conversion, but it does not change the temperature ofthe reactor. It is observed that when the monomer input temperature is taken lower, the reactor?s temperature is nearer to the expected temperature. This result showsthat the reactor temperature can be controlled by control of the supply inputtemperature and flow rate.PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.comScience Code :603Key Words : Fed batch reactor, styrene polymerization, initiator andmonomer effectNumber of pages :79Thesis Advisor : Prof. Dr. Sebahat ERDOĞANPDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com
