Abstract (EN)
Previous research shows a link between stigma and well-being; however, the addition of post-traumatic growth (PTG) remains unstudied in craniofacial literature. This study investigated the relationships between perceived stigmatization, the five dimensions of PTG, and facial appearance satisfaction in 146 adult people who were born with cleft lip and palate using decision trees to uncover the underlying cutpoints and complexities. The sample was divided equally into training and test samples. The training sample accounted for 41% of the variance, and the replicated test sample accounted for a 36% percentage of variance in facial appearance satisfaction. As expected, in contrast to the negative relationship between perceived stigma and facial appearance satisfaction, the combined five dimensions of PTG had a positive relationship with facial appearance satisfaction. People with lower perceived stigmatization and higher PTG had the highest facial appearance satisfaction, whereas people with higher perceived stigmatization and lower PTG had the lowest facial appearance satisfaction. By utilizing tree algorithms, important thresholds were discovered, and while all PTG dimensions were able to enter the model, only average PTG emerged as an important predictor in both paths. In clinical practice, to promote PTG and decrease perceived stigmatization, ageappropriate support groups can provide a safe space for individuals to connect with others who have undergone similar experiences. Also, narrative therapy may be an effective tool for PTG.
