Assessment of institutional care service capacity in elderly care

The aging population in Turkey significantly increases the demand for social and healthcare services, creating challenges, particularly in long-term care services. According to TÜİK data, as of 2023, the population aged 65 and over constitutes 10.2% of the total population. This study aims to analyze the capacity and quality of institutional elderly care services in Turkey within a sociological framework. The research addresses the current state of elderly care services, regional disparities, personnel shortages, and financial resource deficiencies. The study compares Turkey's elderly care services with those of countries with similar demographic structures and examines compliance with international standards. The findings reveal significant deficiencies in the delivery of elderly care services and highlight the need for the expansion and improvement of these services. There are considerable limitations in accessing elderly care services in rural areas, with personnel shortages and low education levels of existing staff negatively impacting service quality. The research emphasizes that both the state and the private sector must take more responsibility to increase the capacity and improve the quality of elderly care services. The state needs to invest more in elderly care services and prioritize the training of personnel in this field. The private sector can contribute by developing innovative solutions to enhance service quality. Additionally, it is recommended to develop applicable strategies in Turkey by leveraging best practices from international examples. In conclusion, this study highlights the necessity of increasing the capacity and improving the quality of institutional elderly care services in Turkey, providing concrete recommendations for policymakers. Strengthening institutional elderly care services is crucial for enhancing the quality of life of elderly individuals, ensuring social justice, and improving societal welfare. The findings of the research will contribute significantly to shaping elderly care policies at both national and international levels.
