Abstract (EN)

Objective: Hearing loss associated with aging can affect individuals socially, psychologically, and cognitively. The use of hearing aids is seen as an important tool in alleviating these effects. Individual attitudes toward the use of technological devices and digital competencies can influence this process. Therefore, this study aims to understand the experiences of older adults regarding hearing aid use and to examine their levels of digital readiness. Method: A qualitative design was chosen to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of older adults with age-related hearing loss, including those who use and do not use hearing aids. Data were collected through semi-structured interview forms. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, following Braun and Clarke's six-phase approach. Results: As a result of the study, four main themes and their associated sub-themes were identified. The main themes are: "Emotional and Social Approaches Toward Hearing Aid Use," "Attitudes and Experiences Related to Hearing Aid Use," "Challenges Related to Hearing Aid Use," and "Individuals' Experiences of Digital Readiness." These themes were found to emerge through mutual interaction within participants' experiences. Participants stated that hearing aids reduce social isolation and improve communication skills; however, they also noted that technical issues and physical discomfort made the process more difficult. Additionally, individuals' familiarity with digital technology and access to support resources were found to influence their hearing aid use experiences in the context of digital readiness. Conclusion: The findings indicate that the use of hearing aids has a positive impact on individuals' quality of life. However, it is considered that supporting digital competencies is necessary for the sustainability of this positive effect. In conclusion, enhancing hearing aid use experiences in the context of digital readiness among older individuals is anticipated to improve the effectiveness of device usage and support overall quality of life.
