Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACTPiles and pile foundations are being used for centuries by the human, in cases in whichstructural loads can?t be carried safely by the soil. Piles are constructed to carry verticalcompression loads, vertical tension loads and lateral loads as well. This MSc. Thesis studiesthe calculations and analysis of laterally loaded vertical piles and the details about a field test.Pile foundations are being used since ancient times in order to transfer the structural loads tothe deeper strata, when the soils are weak and/or problematic. Especially in the last 50 years,intensive and comprehensive analytical and experimental studies are carried out in order toimprove reliable design methods. Important and valuable informations about pile-soilinteraction are obtained by many model and full scale tests.The subject of this MSc. Thesis is, a full-scale field test, which is carried out in order to studythe laterally loaded vertical piles in layered soils. For this purpose, two steel-pipe piles weretested at Kemerburgaz, stanbul. The outside diameter of the first pile was 16.5 cm, its wallthickness was 0.4 cm and its penetration was 8 m., and the second pile penetration was 7.5m.Using a load frame, that was mounted on the piles, two piles were tests at the same time byapplying a lateral load to pull them together. The behaviour of the pile under applied loadswas observed by an inclinometer. The inclinometer casing was attached inside of the pile.The results obtained from the field tests are compared with the AllPile results. Thecomparisons of pile-head deflection for Pile 1 and Pile 2, are shown in the sixth part. Pile 1was in a good agreement between results from experiment and from analysis, withcomputations for pile-head deflection.Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 are describes several laterally-loaded pile analyse methods. InChapter 4, the case studies about the laterally loaded piles are given. Chapter 5, describes thefield testing program, in situ tests, laboratory tests, soil stratigraphy and soil classification.The comparisons of pile-head deflection, are shown in Chapter 6. The results of the load testsare discussed in Chapter 7.xvi
